The SBA HUBZone certification process lets you compete for federal contracts set aside for business zones that don't get enough business. If your business is in a participating area, you can qualify as a disadvantaged small business. This government contracting program is run by the Small Business Administration (SBA) and is supported by the Administration and the U.S. Congress. Its goal is to promote economic growth and job growth in troubled areas by giving small businesses access to more government contracting opportunities.

The Small Business Administration (SBA) controls and runs the HUBZone certification, which decides which companies can get contracts of this kind. It also lists qualified small HUBZone businesses, which federal agencies can use to find partners. It decides which proposals are eligible to get HUBZone contracts and tells Congress how the program helps people get jobs and invest in these areas.

If your business gets a HUBZone Certification, your business will have access to millions of dollars of government spending. HUBZone-certified businesses can still compete for contracts through other social and economic programs for which they might be eligible. If you qualify, you'll get:

  • A 10% lower price over your competitors who also bid on the same government contract
  • Access to the 3% of the mandated federal contracts given to businesses certified in the HUBZone
  • Set-aside contracts that are only open to bids from HUBZone firms
  • Marketing and networking opportunities of the federal marketplace

If you want to join the HUBZone program, you need to meet the following requirements:

  • Be a small business
  • Be at least 51 percent owned and run by U.S. citizens, a Community Development Corporation, an agricultural cooperative, a Native Hawaiian organization, or a Native American tribe.
  • Have the main office of your business in a HUBZone
  • At least 35% of your workers must live in a HUBZone

You’ll need to recertify for the HUBZone program once a year. There is no limit to the length of time a business can participate as long as it continues to qualify. A program examination will be required every three years.

HUBZone businesses must notify SBA if their business is involved in a merger or acquisition or if, while performing on a HUBZone contract, drops below 20% HUBZone residency.
