SPECIAL OFFER: Get GoDaddy's Basic WordPress Hosting for just $1 per month: https://goo.gl/JLjBRh. Select Basic Plan, then 12 months term.

In this video, we'll cover how to update WordPress, your plugins, and your themes. We'll also cover what you can do if something goes wrong during an update.

Before doing any updates, make a backup of your site or do it on a staging server. Both of these were covered in previous lessons.

Minor releases (example: 3.8.2) and security releases will be updated automatically in WordPress.

Major releases need to be updated manually. For example, going from 3.8.4 to 3.9.0 requires a manual update.

Updating is a one click process from the admin.

If you see a "failed update" message, delete the .maintenance file in your WordPress root using your host's File Manager.

If the site still doesn't appear, download https://wordpress.org/latest.zip and unzip it in your WordPress root. It will reset your core files, but not touch any other files or your content.

Plugins and themes can be bulk updated from the update area.
